Helen Daniel celebrates her 101st birthday in Delray
A birthday party across town, a sales tax refund on impact windows, and a full week at Arts Garage.
Helen Daniel celebrated her 101st birthday after starting the morning with her annual beach run. Also: a state refund for impact-resistant windows and doors, plus events at Arts Garage.
Helen Daniel celebrated her 101st birthday with family at Delray Beach's Opal Grand Resort and Spa. Daniel was born in Germany in 1925 and survived the Holocaust after hiding in an attic for 10 months. Her family escaped with help from their chauffeur, Peter Starch, and later rebuilt their lives in Queens. On the morning of her birthday, Daniel kept her annual tradition of running on the beach. The weekend ended with a family dinner at 50 Ocean. She told the Sun Sentinel that she hopes lessons taught in schools help ensure this history is never repeated.
Save the receipt on those impact windows
If you are replacing windows or doors before the next storm, hang onto the paperwork. Florida is refunding sales tax on impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors installed on a home. You do not get the break at the register. You file for the refund afterward, with the forms and your receipts. The house has to be site-built, carry a homestead exemption, and have a just value of $700,000 or less. One property per owner, and the refund tops out at $500. Purchases count from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029. Claims are due by September 30, 2029.
Six waterfront dining options in and around Delray
A new waterfront dining guide includes six Delray-area stops: Boston's on the Beach, 50 Ocean, Caffe Luna Rosa, Sandbar, Deck 84, and Latitudes at Delray Sands Resort in Highland Beach. Buffett night at Old School Square
Two Fridays out, Old School Square goes full Margaritaville. "Party in Paradise" is Delray's tribute to Jimmy Buffett, and it starts at 5 p.m. on August 28. The downtown authority has it on the calendar. A Buffett night on that lawn is about as on-brand as this town gets, and the early start makes it workable with kids before the crowd thickens.
Bowie takes the Arts Garage stage tonight
Tonight at eight, Arts Garage hands the room over to David Bowie. LIVE BOWIE is a seven-piece tribute band fronted by a singer who goes by Tommy Stardust. The set runs the catalog from 1969 to 1984, with costume changes covering the Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, and Let's Dance eras. Expect "Changes," "Heroes," "Rebel Rebel," "Modern Love," and "Space Oddity." The venue is at 94 NE 2nd Ave, so dinner before or a walk after is easy. If your Saturday plan was the couch and the remote, here is a better one.
More nights at Arts Garage
Arts Garage does not slow down after Bowie. Tuesday the 18th is Spoken Word Open Mic, held the third Tuesday of every month. Sign-up starts at 7 p.m. in person, performers pay $10, and it is 18 and over. Original work only, three to five minutes each. Friday the 21st brings Never Stop Believin', a Journey tribute that covers the Escape and Frontiers years with a costume change mid-show. Saturday the 22nd is Siempre Flamenco, back with a new program of flamenco musicians and dancers. All three start at 8 p.m.
Commission workshop Tuesday, agenda posted
