Lead story

George Bush Boulevard bridge stays closed through July 20

The George Bush Boulevard bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway closed to vehicles and pedestrians on June 1 and is scheduled to stay shut through Monday, July 20, while Palm Beach County completes essential deck repairs. The closure began at 7 a.m. and runs continuously: the bridge will not reopen overnight or for partial access at any point during the work. County engineering staff reviewed whether they could keep part of the span open or reopen it overnight and found no way to do so safely. Drivers and pedestrians are routed via Federal Highway, Atlantic Avenue and Ocean Boulevard. The Coastal Star notes the nearest crossings are Atlantic Avenue to the south and Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach to the north. Boat traffic on the Intracoastal is not expected to be affected. The 1949 bascule bridge has needed this work for a while, and the county is separately studying whether to repair, rehabilitate or replace it, with public hearings anticipated in 2028 and a study completion targeted for 2029. Anyone crossing between the mainland and the barrier island here should plan extra time and follow the posted detour. George Bush Boulevard Bridge To Close June 1 Through July 20

Police arrest four in auto-theft probe tied to 14 thefts

Delray Beach Police arrested four people, three of them juveniles, after serving search warrants at four homes in an investigation into auto burglaries and at least 14 auto thefts, the department said. Officers seized an AR-15 pistol, several loaded extended magazines with 9mm ammunition, five forms of ID belonging to burglary victims and other stolen property. The department pushed back on claims that officers hit the wrong house, saying the warrants were served at the intended locations. Chief Darrell Hunter called it a successful operation and said the investigation is ongoing. Police reminded residents to lock vehicles, remove valuables and never leave keys or firearms inside. Charges are allegations unless proven in court. Delray Beach Police Arrest Four In Auto Burglary Probe

FAU student charged in Delray minor-sex sting

Christian Joseph Walden, 21, of Boynton Beach, was arrested the night of May 26 at the Home Depot on West Atlantic Avenue after police say he traveled there to meet someone he believed was a 13-year-old boy, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Palm Beach County. Police said the decoy profile was part of an undercover operation tied to the volunteer group 561 Predator Catchers, and that Walden continued communicating after the profile identified itself as underage. He was held at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $25,000 combined bail on two charges. The charges are allegations, and Walden has not been convicted.
